Dental and Oral health is yet to become a priority for many people in Indonesia. Many reason that make people not take dental health as seriously as they should. Economic situation, anxiety, lack of knowledge on Oral and Dental health and the lack of open line of communication between dental health providers and patients make the public not to aware of the need to maintain their dental health.
Effective communication between dentist and patients are important because it can minimize problem in dental health. Communication becomes the major point in building good relationship between dentists and patients. In building good relationship with effective communication, it is hoped that patients will be satisfied and feel comfortable during dental treatment.
This research will be find out the reason that patient discomfort to go to dentist, level of effectiveness in the communication between dentist and patient, and patients’ perspective about importance of efficiently managing the relationship between them and dentist and also their needs in the relationship.
This research used qualitative research method and exploratory design. The reason that researcher uses exploratory design because the researcher wanted to explore the patients’ perspective towards dentist, and effective communication between them. Also the researcher sort to know patient opinion towards the importance of managing the relationship between patient and dentist.
The researcher conclude that patients have discomfort to go to dentist because of anxiety, waste of time, and waste of money. The patient said that communication is important so the patients will know their dental health condition. The patients also complained that several dentists still are very self conscious and lacked time so they could not communicate well with the patient. And they also said that relationship is very important to them because it can make patient trust and be open with dentist.
